Will this be enough time to check my bag and make the connection? Both flights were booked on different tickets. I understand AA is in terminal 5, and I don't mind picking up the pace to make this connection! Or would it be better to change for the 4.5hr layover which I do not prefer. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to FlyerTalk mb11g!

On separate tickets that is pushing it, as it leaves very little margin for error or delays due to weather or maintenance issues. On one ticket, you will be protected on the next available flight to DEN. That is not the case when you are travelling on separate tickets, on separate airlines that are not members of the same alliance.

AA operates out of both T4 and T5. Currently, AA flights to Denver are operated by American Eagle. Those flights leave from the remote regional terminal. To get there, you have to take a bus after clearing TSA security. The buses depart from both T4 and T5 every 10-15 minutes and, depending on traffic and aircraft movement on the tarmac, the ride itself can take 10-20. Thus you have to budget time to clear immigration and customs upon arrival, that may involve a wait for your bag to arrive on the carousel, to walk to T4 - under five minutes - or T5 - probably 3-5 minutes longer - then you will have to check your bag - AA's bag check deadline at LAX is 45 minutes before flight time and sometimes there are lines..
