Most of the provincial Cuban airports can accommodate surprisingly-large a/c. On our departure out of HOG, there was a A330 belonging to, IIRC, LTU.
Lengthy taxyways too, which can serve as emergency runways. Paid for with Soviet money. Why do you think ... ? Incidentally, I noticed just a couple of years ago Aeroflot holiday flights from Moscow to Varadero. Cuba has taken over from Dominican Republic as the principal "cheap" Caribbean resort from Europe. Cuba has controlled crime against tourists. Dominican Republic didn't.
Notwithstanding the close-by oil refineries of Curacao, the jet fuel came from the Black Sea refineries in Odessa, Shannon airport-style.
