I don't want to hijack too far afield but I am getting the same thing for a flight change. Do we still have a choice whether to accept the change or not? Also, does AA even inform the passenger, I found out about the change via an award wallet email

You don't have to accept the flight change, but if the flight is gone, you really should do something.
If you are going to replace it, then the sooner you do this, the sooner you get to choose from the remaining seats on your new flight, from a schedule that is more suitable than what happens if you wait until the last minute
Remember, you are not the only one with this schedule change, you are in competition with others for what you replace it with
