We subscribe to TV Japan. Mrs. KI-NRT spends most of her time on it when we're in the U.S. (I just watch some shows and dramas that she records from it.)

According to her, all news is NHK, and top-tier ones. And although it's not exactly live, it's close enough (maybe by a few hours or so max... and there are replays, too.)

Plenty of good programs for kids - both toddlers and adolescents.

In addition to that, we used iSakura, but sadly, they seem to have recently halted all NHK streaming services so you're out of luck there if NHK is what you're looking for.
