Occasionally after you do the iris/fingerprint scan the screen flashes random check in which case you have to show your ID to the TDC. Is that possibly what happened here? Was his wife asked to show ID?
I have occasionally been selected for this. The fact remains however that the vast majority of the time I am able to use CLEAR without having to show my ID to the TSA regardless of that sentence on their web site, so I don't think this or other anecdotes refutes what I said
(I guess to be accurate I should have said originally that it's not a 100% guarantee)
