I think other then maybe at SEA, the regular elite lines are probably short enough most of the time that you can just use them for bag drop. And they'll offer to print you an extra boarding pass if you want, too.
This has always been my experience at PDX. I don't mess with printing out my own bag tag. I hop in the elite line, check my bags, and get a printed boarding pass to have as a backup. I've never waited more than 2-3 minutes in line.
