That's my understanding as well. They need to offer me a choice. From the EU passenger rights page:
If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you, on a one off basis, a choice between:
- the reimbursement of your ticket and, if you have a connecting flight, a return flight to the airport of departure at the earliest opportunity
- re-routing to your final destination at the earliest opportunity or,
- re-routing at a later date at your convenience under comparable transport conditions, subject to the availability of seats.
I called them again, but they wouldn't budge. This time the CS rep said they can't reroute me on one of their Star Alliance partners because their agreement with them doesn't apply when
they have canceled the flight. I guess my next step is to try and get them to send me written documentation that I was not offered a re-routing and then I'll seek compensation later. Which from all I've read is going to be a long an annoying process.
