If not having to check your bag is important, getting on earlier will help. If you have no status, you may want to consider paying to reserve a preferred seat, which would let you board earlier (in addition to more room on the plane).
That's the best bit of advice you'll get. The bins are fine for my 20-inch rollaboard, but they can fill quickly if the flight is full or close to it. You want to board as early as you can.
