Seems like they are starting out high. If you take cash rate for a points night room and add in the upgrade offers they gave you the total cost of the room is more than the regular cash price per night.
I have never stayed at this resort, but many past resort upgrades I have only paid (at most) an amount equal to the normal cash rate. Usually much less. But I usually start the conversation with the resort about six months out.

I thought the same. I have the hilton Moorea booked as a backup for nights at the base points rate for the same timeframe. So if Marriott doesn't come through I can always stay there. I'd much rather stay at the st regis though. I emailed back hoping to negotiate. Maybe I emailed too early?
