Definitely a thing. I have iMessage chats with groups and one of the criteria is you have to have an iPhone that runs a software that supports iMessage. If you get a single Android user in there it turns the whole group message green and removes all the iMessage features.

That said, I don't consider that to be shaming, it's just the reality of running a different system.
