While IAD G was all that is described above, remember that it was put up almost overnight in response to UA’s primary express carrier (Atlantic Coast) breaking away to create an all CRJ200 airline on its own (Independence Air). I traveled through IAD a lot during that time and spent many hours at the infamous G gates. Shockingly, Independence didn’t last even two years IIRC and UA moved their express flights back to normal gates. At the time, I was just impressed UA actually was able to pull off getting enough planes and gates to withstand the loss of the vast majority of its express network. It was an example of UA defending its hub aggressively and successfully.
