Completely agree, I do this whilst on the train as well - I consider it more of a 'pro' move though. I'm more than happy to explain to someone across from me as to why I put my case above them, and why they should put their above me. Granted, I am rather tall, and would not likely offend anyone who happened to be sat below as I can pull out my case without getting too close.. I think we've all seen an occasion where the following has happened -

I was more confused about what people are doing where 'putting luggage above you' was not the go-to; where are they putting it?? I know there are people who will be sitting further back and try to get their luggage as far ahead as possible, but those are few and far between.
