I'm probably in the minority, and would clearly annoy passengers across the aisle from me, but on single aisle aircraft I always put my cabin bag above the seats across the aisle. Firstly its much easier to keep an eye on it in flight and secondly, it makes it much easier to retrieve the bag when disembarking as it saves turning 180 degrees in the aisle.
Completely agree, I do this whilst on the train as well - I consider it more of a 'pro' move though. I'm more than happy to explain to someone across from me as to why I put my case above them, and why they should put their above me. Granted, I am rather tall, and would not likely offend anyone who happened to be sat below as I can pull out my case without getting too close.. I think we've all seen an occasion where the following has happened -
I was more confused about what people are doing where 'putting luggage above you' was not the go-to; where are they putting it?? I know there are people who will be sitting further back and try to get their luggage as far ahead as possible, but those are few and far between.
