This is a pretty standard dialogue/interaction with a Customer Service Rep. The conversation of "I don't like the Offers I am receiving" and "I no longer like this card" are two very different conversations. After you mention that you would like to cancel (or are considering cancelling) they will transfer you to a Retention Specialist. There is a retention offer thread with a wealth of information here. I hate to say it, but if you really want to cancel then they aren't going to trip over themselves to keep you (even after 30 years).
I am well aware of retention offers and play the game well. However, this is the first time any customer service rep voluntary provided information of promotions available to not cancel the card. In my experience, any mention of the possibility of canceling the card is met with a script reading of all the benefits the card provides and the card holder generally has to ask if there are any promotions available. This time there was no reciting of the benefits, just an immediate offer of possible promotions to remain with Amex as soon as I mentioned I was considering other options.
