So, just as a data point for this thread, even though I had bought a ticket to Waterloo from Basingstoke, I decided to test the water and see what would happen if I used my Oyster+ to tap out at Waterloo and all worked well and the gates opened. So from now on I will buy as far as Surbiton, saving me ~£4 on every trip. Always better in my pocket than theirs!
