Not sure if you're used to the cold, but I lived in Chicago for 20 years and it's cold in December, and the public transportation options consist of buses as the L doesn't go to McCormick Place. There is also the Metra though, I've never used it. There's a station at Millenium Park, so the CAA is close. Google Maps shows about 18 minutes to McCormick Place station. But the Loop is very dead at night.
So, unless you like to walk, a lot... About the farthest south I will walk is the Shedd Acquarium or Field Museum, but not at that time of year. Or taxi's/Ubers/Lyfts.
So, as MSPEconomist mentioned, it depends on your schedule and networking needs. I wouldn't stay in that area though, as you'll probably find yourself wanting to head up to the Loop or north Michigan area/Rush St, etc. Like I said, I like the PH.
I stayed at HR McCormick a couple months ago. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was (I think it's been recently renovated). And they had a pretty workable breakfast solution (at the time, they gave something like $20/person credit at their cafe/market), so for 2 adults and 2 kids we all had starbucks, some sort of breakfast sandwich and granola bar or something like that. Not amazing, but better than what many hotels have been doing during covid.
