Let’s try and be balanced and rational when evaluating policy.
While I agree with the importance of being rational and avoiding alarmism, the Netherlands
isn’t having the best time of it. Rates have gone up ten fold in a couple of weeks, and Germany has just relisted the Netherlands as a risk area.
I suspect the additional concern about the UK (compared to the Netherlands) is multi-faceted:
- The UK is a much larger country, so the absolute rate of infections will be more than the Netherlands. That means a greater likelihood of variants emerging.
- The experience of the Netherlands might sound a cautionary note, in terms of unlocking and seeing rapid rises in cases, which seemingly is not being taken into consideration by the British Government.
- The British Government doesn’t have the world’s best track record during this pandemic of swiftly and proactively reacting to changes. Some criticism may well be due to the fact that people perceive that we should perhaps learn from our mistakes rather than potentially repeating them.
So overall: absolutely, let’s try to stay rational, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be somewhat alarmed by the UK approach at present.
