Seems pretty harsh. I am also surprised by those responses.

If your call tomorrow doesn't resolve it, I would be inclined to just leave it alone, with the unconfirmed segment. The worst case is they cancel the whole reservation, which it seems like they want to do anyway, and which I think is your circumstance already. The best case is it gets flagged for someone whose job it is to resolve these issues, and that person will call you. If you get that call, the agent will likely just put you into whatever fare class is open and matching your reservation.
