Hertz charging erroneous underage fee (or, how I turned 120 years old)

Hi all-

In Nov 2020, I rented from Hertz Detroit and after returning the car (which was prepaid), I got an invoice for an additional amount with no explanation. I found out after emailing that the amount was an underage fee. I've been renting from Hertz for over 15 years and am well past that age. It was tricky to sort it out but eventually got it reversed.

This is what Hertz said at the time:

Attached is your receipt for your recent rental. It appears that there is an underage fee, due to the fact that your date of birth is showing at 01/1901. I believe it safe to assume you are not 119. This may be a glitch in our computer system but to be safe, please look at your gold profile and ensure your date of birth is accurate. I will submit a request for a credit for the fee. Please allow up to 14 business days for the credit.
I checked my profile and my DOB was fine. I hadn't ever changed it since I signed up for the program in 2005.

Since then I've rented about 5 times without any issue. But today, I returned a car at BDL and the agent encouraged the long queue of those in the return line to just go and their receipts would be emailed to them. This time it was not a prepaid rental. Yet again, I got hit with the underage fee!! It shows it clearly on the receipt this time. And I checked my profile and it looks fine.

Has this happened to anyone else? Obviously I can just email Hertz and get a refund, but it's pretty annoying that they will retroactively add this fee after the reservation for no apparent reason...
