There are no all-inclusive resorts in Hawaii like you might find in the Carribbean, but there are some travel agents who will design an all-inclusive itinerary that packages hotels, sightseeing, meals, and cars - but with that service, you pay the markup on every piece of the trip. I have seen some pricing for 2-3 island hops in the $2,000-$3,000 per person range...you could certainly do better by purchasing the pieces individually.

The best way to control your costs is to plan upfront, decide on a budget, and stick to it. I use miles for airfare, sometimes points for one or two hotel nights, and can do 1-2 island stays for 7-10 days for about $1,000 pp including food, sightseeing tours, convertible rental cars, and a few paid hotel nights.

If you don't have points for hotel nights, you can use Priceline to keep your hotel and car costs under control, once you are firm on your dates. Visit biddingfortravel.com to see what others are paying for Hawaii hotels and cars, and you can use the site to learn about the different hotel properties and decide on the level of luxury you want to bid on.

When I am in Hawaii, I spend most of my meals eating like and with locals - that means alot of inexpensive, filling meals, like plate lunches, and avoiding eating at the hotel. Doing this, we save up for a few 'splurge' meals where cost is no object and the overall amount spent on food is fairly reasonable over the trip.

If you're just going to stay on Maui, why not stay in two different area - perhaps a few nights down at Wailea and a few up at Kaanapali or Kapalua. With some good planning, you can stay on Maui for a few days and hop over to the Big Island or Oahu for a few days to see other parts of Hawaii.
