From the standpoint of the customer, is there any advantage at all to having to state whether the travel is personal or business? I see where it's useful for the DL marketing department and analytics, but for me, it's just another annoying step I have to click through to get into the site.

I'd always felt that in good website design you can get anywhere in the site in no more than three clicks. INMO adding an entry barrier defeats that principle.
