I believe that's mostly to cover their butts in case someone did find a useful glitch or loophole or something else happened. They could devalue AA points by 100x to be near worthless and I think not much any of us can do, but then, they'd also go bankrupt with angry customers.
The ONLY reason I can think of starting NOW is if you have Alaska flights coming up and you're a good lawyer and want to use those flights to count towards the EQD requirements, since half their terms (and I would think Terms and Conditions would be the more legal document) include it and half don't. Maybe by accepting now, you could hold them to it. Otherwise, wait until maybe say, 72 hours before your first flight to start your clock?
