Reservations agents have always advised me not to rely on holds for itineraries involving partner metal for precisely this reason - the partner canceling unticketed reservations sooner than AA’s hold policy. And if that partner award space is gone it’s not much fun trying to get things put back together.
Fortunately, I haven’t experienced this problem, but I do remember having an issue once where there was a significant partner schedule change while a reservation was on hold. Basically the partner segment dropped off and it was not easy finding an alternative option.
