I have indeed been paying for each incidental (meals, drinks, sundries, …) as a separate transaction on my credit card. It hasn’t been particularly painful. I simply hand my Identity card over with my CC (or present my Identity card, when paying with Apple Pay e.g. for sundries).
Now I need to figure out how to ‘convert’ this stay from Bonvoy to Identity so that I get Identity points instead of Bonvoy ones. I made a couple phone calls and the sense I got was that this can be hit or miss. I hope I can get that done. I also have 3 upcoming stays booked via Bonvoy… I was going to leave them as-is and deal with the ‘conversion’ at checkout time. I’ll make future reservations via Identity but the good rates I got are already gone for the stays I’ve already booked.
Yeah I've been toying with the idea of just going 100% Identity on my next stay. I'm not
intending to hit either the 14k Ambassador spend or the 10k Identity spend (to get to Identity Platinum)... but I certainly don't care about making Ambassador, whereas I would definitely enjoy Identity Platinum even if it were just on one trip.
End of the day though, it's a comp stay and I'll probably have at most $2k spend and I do pretty well spending Bonvoy points so I'll probably just put everything on the folio and leave it crediting to Bonvoy (and then follow up with a missing points request a couple weeks after to see if they can add any of the F&B spend that invariably will fail to credit in full).
