In any case, the whole argument of children vs spouses vs friends/coworkers as guests is now moot. I’d imagine the “solution” Amex is trying to do here is (1) reduce crowding and (2) increase fee revenue (likely #2 was a bigger priority), from guests who now have to pay or from additional AU fees.
Depending on what you mean by moot, we know what the plan is today. I do suspect some tweaks are still coming, and will happen even after the change. For example, I suspect guest passes might be offered occasionally as an "Amex Offer" for certain spend threshold, maybe by using Amex travel, etc. For me it is now an August 2022 problem, the first time I'll have to pay the $695
