Pre-departure testing requirements

Pre-departure tests are required

Travellers from Australia now require a negative PCR or RT-PCR pre-departure test to enter New Zealand.

You will need to have had both your COVID-19 sample taken and your result returned no more than 72 hours before the scheduled departure time of your first international departure. COVID-19 testing and result certificates for travel clearance are provided by private pathology clinics.

You only need to get a pre-departure test if you have been in Australia for more than 72 hours.

Travellers from Australian states where quarantine-free travel is paused cannot enter New Zealand, even with a negative pre-departure test. There may also be restrictions on transiting in and out of states where quarantine-free travel to New Zealand is paused.

If you have received a COVID-19 vaccination, you will still need to take a test.

Check locations of interest in Australia

If you have been at a location of interest (exposure site) you cannot travel to New Zealand until 14 days after exposure, even with a negative pre-departure test.

Managed isolation is not required

Travellers from Australia are not required to enter managed isolation or quarantine upon arrival into New Zealand.
<snip>
But is not up date as folks from SYD(NSW) must go into 14 days quarantine. NSW quarantine free travel is paused

Latest update — 12 July

  • Quarantine-free travel from New South Wales (NSW) remains paused.
  • Travel from Queensland is paused, but will resume at 11:59pm on Monday 12 July.
  • While return green flights from Queensland have started, they will discontinue once regular quarantine-free flights begin on Monday night.
  • The Government is working towards managed return flights from NSW. These travellers will have to go into MIQ.
