Australia has a different "visa" system to most. ALl that is done is to put your passport number into the airline booking. This allows immigration to check details (interpol / etc) on all flights coming in on a particular day. I'm guessing if you were eligible for an electronic visa, it would be quite easy to do a similar electronic check once you arrive at the airport ..
