But to answer your question:

No, you should NOT have been walked. You should have been accommodated in the King suite with apologies and a rollaway (if needed). Probably a discount on the rate and/or some points. I can't imagine how the idea of two rooms came into play.

You need to get the general manager involved, as well as corporate Marriott. Be sure to be very clear and concise about what transpired, taking into account some of the queries in this thread. You probably won't get any cash, but you might get a offer for a free night, or a bunch of points.

This is the danger in arriving late. Night Audit. They know nothing about customer service, or even company/hotel policies.
