I believe their claim was heavily weighted (pun intended) to fuel savings rather than maintenance savings. And when they "merged" with US Airways the logic of that decision was thrown out the air lock. So the savings must have been massive!

The move to all carbon composites and the impending delivery of the 787 meant the end of the glorious polished alooo'minum livery. If anyone remembers AA's A300s, they had a patchy ragdoll look, with large sections of the fuselage and vertical stabiliser painted battleship grey.
