Don't they have to be stripped back to the metal periodically for safety inspections? AA used to claim that their polished metal livery saved them a fortune in maintenance and fuel costs.
I believe their claim was heavily weighted (pun intended) to fuel savings rather than maintenance savings. And when they "merged" with US Airways the logic of that decision was thrown out the air lock. So the savings must have been massive!
