I know I could call Amex, but hoping someone may have had previous experience. I recently got a promo offer on my Amex Hilton Aspire card for 0.00% interest on qualifying purchases for 12 months.
Per Amex: We're writing to confirm your new promotional Annual Percentage Rate (APR) for eligible purchases as described below.
- Your promotional APR for purchases is 0.00%.
- Your promotional APR is valid from 06/25/2021 through your billing period ending in 07/2022.
After the end of the promotional period, the APR for these purchases will be a variable rate based on the Prime Rate plus 15.49%, which is currently 18.74%
**. Please know that any existing purchase balance prior to the beginning of the promotional period will continue to be charged interest at your current APR even during the promotional period. The promotional APR will not apply to any purchases made before or after the promotional period. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. The Cash Advance APR and Penalty APR(s) still apply to your account as reflected in your Card Agreement.
I know part of your credit score is based on credit utilization, both on total credit and on individual cards, so maxing this out to over 50% or higher on the card will have a negative impact on my score. However, this type of negative impact is remedied quickly by paying the balance down. I can do that. I just looked at this offer as an opportunity to borrow money for free without paying any interest for up to 12 months.
Does this mean I can basically make only the minimum payments until May and just pay everything off by June or July?
Realistically, I normally use my Aspire for Hilton only with an occasional restaurant purchase or to redeem an Amex offer. However, I could potentially be taking a couple trips in the next 3 to 6 months and this card would potentially allow me to book hotels and keep more money in my bank account until next summer.
