ATC re-routed the plane at least 100-200 miles SW of DEN...finally landed and parked by with 5 minutes to go until (regular) door closing time of the connecting flight. Ran to the connecting gate, and GA informed they held the door closing and plane departure. Also got the below text message, but didn't notice until I sat down at my seat:
Opposite experience yesterday - inbound to IAH was late because of a late departure resulting from late-arriving aircraft. Landed about time door for connection should have closed - got text message saying I was rebooked on flight for next day and sure enough when I ran to adjacent gate for where departing flight it had already closed . . . particularly frustrating because it was (a) last flight of day to DCA; (b) last flight to IAD was already booked full; (c) next available nonstop to DCA wasn't until late the next day (now today). And we weren't only pax in situation - saw at least one at CS desk and talked to a couple more on the later flight.

So, anecdote - not sure this system worked as it should have - IAH-DCA flight arrived early anyway (10 mins) - and UA could have saved itself a hassle for at least a half-dozen pax who had to be rebooked/rerouted and inconvenienced.
