About a $300 difference in fare; SLC cheaper. Flight from IAD to MSP on CR, and to SLC on 737.

SLC is a no brainer here. An RJ flight into MSP is guaranteed to arrive at either the A, B, or C concourse while the wide-body to HNL will almost certainly go out of F or G which is a good 15 min track from A or B and at least 10 mins from C which is cutting it very close for a 40 min layover. IAD-SLC is a mainline 738 which should arrive into A and your HNL wide-body flight will also go out of A .
