I think anchovies are a great ingredient, and people who shy away from them do so because they don't understand their full flavor potential (or they bit into a filet in a salad and got pricked by a bone).
I can not do a whole anchovy but I agree....in many dishes, it just disappears and leaves a nice salty, umami, rich flavor. I just use anchovy paste (perfect for Caesar salad dressing) and it is very versatile.
