If you travel often enough, you can still come out ahead by paying less to fly on ULCCs even if you have to eat the occasional (hopefully inexpensive) ticket. Spirit seems like they try to do the right thing so I think your friend's chances of getting a credit are reasonably good if they make a request with documentation. I hope their family member's condition improves. Something like that happening has a way of making you realize what is important in life.
