I would not think of it as begging, United earlier waived the four segment minimum for non US residents, something I would mention in asking for an exemption. I suspect that with paid FC AS would be happy to keep you, even if you may not be able to fly it this calendar year

I also agree that if flying up front, status is far less important except in mileage accumulation. So becoming a free agent may be a good thing.
