I would try submitting a credit request with documentation of the family member's illness and see what Spirit says. The call center will just give you canned answers but the reps who handle credit requests might have more discretion, especially when there is documentation to support the request. Your friends don't have much to lose.

Thanks for the reply. The family member currently is on life support. I don’t know how
much effort they will put into this. If this were WN, it would not have been an issue; but, as they say, you get what you pay for.
