Last month, I was looking at flight options for a trip this fall.
Delta's website showed that a 6:10 AM departure was $70 less than a departure later in the day. I didn't want to get up at 3:15 AM to catch a 6:10 AM flight, and I definitely did NOT want to have to "run the gauntlet" of sharing the road with drunk / stoned / sleep deprived motorists as I was driving to the airport at 3:45 AM. However, I guessed that, if the flight was priced so low, there was a good chance DL would cancel it, so I decided to take a chance and book the earlier flight.
Sure enough, 1 1/2 weeks after I made my reservation, DL sent me an email that the 6:10 AM flight was cancelled, and they were moving me to the 8:35 AM departure I'd originally wanted to book. It was very nice to save $70, and still wind up confirmed on my preferred flight.
Sometimes, you get lucky :-)
