I think it is a crime that AA sells MC as a product that allows for seat selection (compared to BE), but then marks half the plane's seats as 'preferred' with ~30$ and up charges each way each seat. Are you paying for seat selection or the opportunity to pay for seat selection? It's often the latter.
It doesn't seem any worse than when US rolled this out back in I'm guessing 2006-2007. Sure back then there were regular threads in the US forum here on FT complaining about charges for regular seats, or exit row middles. Heck, they eventually made most aisle/window seats for-pay, and it sounds like that has continued.
The prices seem about the same as what I remember when those threads first popped up about 15 years ago.
