This has been going on for close to 15 years, at least from the US Airways side. They started selling aisle/window seats in main cabin, and exit rows, shortly after the HP/US merger.

Did AA not sell these seats before the US merger? Certainly they've been doing it since that merger. I'm not sure why this is suddenly a shock to everyone.
