PSA: Buy a KLM Light Fare Instead of a Delta Basic Economy Fare When Available
Delta has Basic Economy fares, KLM has Economy Light fares. They cost about the same, but the KLM fare is much better:
  • Delta Basic Economy allows no changes. KLM Economy Light allows free changes.
  • Delta Basic Economy does not allow advanced seat selection under any circumstances. KLM Economy Light allows you to pay for an advance seat, or get it free if you are Silver Medallion or above.
  • If bought on the KLM website, an Economy Light ticket is essentially fully refundable. You have to cancel and get a "refundable voucher", then you can get a refund for the voucher.
Interestingly, you can get an Economy Light Fare flying on a flight booked under the KLM flight number even if the flight is operated by Delta.
