success keeping a car (different reservations)?

As everybody knows cars are in short supply nowadays, was chatting with the agent at checkout (aisle had 6 vehicles in the morning, so very sparse but better than nothing) who said on Monday they had a meltdown. As in the staff, one manager disappeared, another person just left, manager who was left cried. I guess they had no cars and many many customers.
Anyway, she suggested I keep the car even when on a different reservation, and told me how to do it at this location (where to drive specifically), to ensure I have a car, because even if you go in the morning they might have no vehicles.

Anybody have any experience with this? Separate reservations, on the aisle so not a particular vehicle, just pulling up and telling them you are returning and picking up but want to keep the car. I can see an argument some might make that you don't get to keep the car and just have to get in line for a new vehicle, but it does make sense that I can keep my vehicle (and thus have guaranteed availability) if I'm bringing one back.
(I know there has been sparse discussion of this before, saying YMMV, but during this period it is more relevant)
