This is super annoying and awfully complicated and very poorly communicated (the entire A3-OA-status thing).
The point is, OA is not *A which is why there are no benefits provided to *A frequent flyers on the basis of *A rules.
However, some FFPs have contracts with OA that do result in the recognition of the *G status despite OA not being *A.
There are only two (apart from M+B) that come to mind, UAMP and LH M&M.
Those two programs have contracts with OA that allow earning miles on OA flights and maybe the recognition of the status beyond that (baggage, lounge, etc).
I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think that's what it boils down to.
That's a different story though. LH has decided that the *A rules are to be interpreted in a way where you're only entitled to an additional bag if your ticket includes at least one free bag to begin with.
So when travelling on Light fares even *G don't receive an extra piece of luggage.
However, on TATL flights there is an exception to that rule which has been in place for a long time (but obviously might be revoked at any time since it's just a goodwill thing).
One last question... for clarity, I don't need to pay for a bag as I am a United Airlines Gold Star Alliance member, correct? I was hoping to purchase an economy light fare?
