TTmex- thank you for your great explanation.

Can I then assume that this is a stealth way of being forced to use a relatively poor value per Avois (I calculate 0.006 USD per Avios) in this instance?

It seems to be the default option when redeeming any Avios connecting flight unless I make a phone call.
