A letter has been known to do the trick - bmi Gold is what Evil Empire level? Is it equivalent to OW Emerald or Sapphire? How much is your spend with the Evil Empire? What are your travel patterns?
Pop in to the Qantas website, get the address of the FF service centre, and write to them with all of the above. Include copies of your recent FF statements.
If 99% of your GBP20K worth of travel is going to be trans-Atlantic, then QF would not be interested, since there is nothing in it for them.
If ALL of your travel is to Australia then I would say they WOULD be interested in status matching, since it ties you to QF rather than the other OW carriers.
Otherwise, I would suggest you work your way up like the rest of us did.
