Yes, and some things haven't changed much-- and I STILL loved Puerto Rico, so it's not about fabulous hotel stays-- I just have a hard time blowing my entire HHonors account on a lackluster experience, OR hate blowing $350/night after taxes (La Concha) on said lackluster experience.
Another alternative we have is just going to Luquillo or the west coast and chilling at a 2* hotel for around $100 a night. BUT rental cars are also an issue-- more than $100/day.
Not to mention most island rentals are in the Caribbean. If you DO want a place where blowing $350/400/night is worth it? El Convento in Viejo San Juan. MORE than worth it to stay in the thick of fun all night. No beach, but you're by the old city entrance, across from a beautiful...uh...home of worship. Usually street musicians out and icing on the cake? It was built in the 1600s!
