I'm guessing it's not really bad news after all. AmEx needs the miles to give out anyway. I'm sure they give away tens of millions of them (if not hundreds) monthly. They're purchasing the amount they normally need anyway, just paying for all of them in advance. It's not going to change how many are actually distributed.
