Whilst checking the loads can give you some idea, there are so many factors that can make reality very different to seeing Y9 etc.... I have had flights where I have got Op-ups on flights looking wide open and then not got Op-ups on flights that looked overbooked. If you are talking about having more space around you I'm not sure what help would buying a seat achieve?
