It might help to check your fare rules, especially for the original ticket. I suspect that DL agents have given you special favors in rebooking you from domestic FC to D1. When I look for domestic FC flights, often the fare rules specify that certain flights/routes/aircraft cannot be used and the prohibitions seem designed to apply to D1 flights. ADDED: Do any of your ticket receipts indicate a broken fare? Also, what are the current legal routings for YYZ to PSP as your rebooked tickets seem to be taking the long away around to PSP from Canada.
I'm betting that YYZ-JFK-LAX-PSP was at one time an allowed routing during COVID era. If going to a lot of "smaller" West coast destinations you need to go through LAX. Thus going YYZ-JFK-LAX -??? isnt unreasonable. Now if the destination is served via a number of other hubs, then going via JFK isn't normally an option for routing. (YYZ-SLC even pre CV19 was once daily and there never was YYZ-LAX/SEA)
Regardless, OP had a schedule change. Just like in IRROPS theres no need to follow fare routing rules. It's more or less agent discretion for domestic CONTUS/CANADA routing.
