So, I'm a little confused.....am I missing something? Shouldn't I be able to select seats "at any time up to 24 hours of my flight"?
Basic seat selection after initial booking is only available in the 24hrs before departure when paying the fee, I believe. If you following the seat selection FAQ relating to Manage Trips at this link:

they state:
"Can I change or add a seat on an existing reservation?
If you have an existing reservation, purchased for any fare but Basic, you can change or select a seat by going to
Manage trips and entering your reservation code and last name."
