Adding to the thanks for this! I just booked a flight using Aeroplan and received the same error message. Using the app, I was able to pick my seats. (The app "remembers" your flight, although it requires you to enter the full ticket number for each passenger before you can access it....)

Didn't see any way to enter passport information. I guess it's OK to leave that until check-in at IST?
